My Top 10 Golden Rules For A Flat Stomach

Many women I speak to tell me that the main area of their body they want to see a difference is their stomach. They usually want to lose weight but mainly want to shed the body fat around their mid and tone up the muscles there to give them more of a defined look when wearing their favourite dress or top.
If you look on the Internet for toning your stomach muscles, you will get inundated with information, tips, workouts, fad diets and so on. There is a lot of stuff out there. The thing is, who do you trust and more importantly, what is the best advice?
As I've worked with women for a lot of years, I know what works and what doesn't. For example, doing 200 Situps every day won't get you a flat stomach if you don't make other changes in your life too. I would say the ratio of what you should be concentrating on is: diet 70-80% and exercise 20-30%. So, making sure that the food you eat is clean and healthy is crucial. What I mean by 'clean' is by cutting out (or cutting down drastically) processed foods, sugar, gluten, dairy and wheat (in a lot of cases) and alcohol. Follow my tips below and you should see a massive difference.
1. Avoid dieting and diet pills altogether and don't follow the latest weight loss diet which appears on the front cover of a magazine. Most of those diets are extreme and it's usually when some Hollywood star has needed to lose weight very quickly for a TV show or film. The reality is that only 2% of weight loss diets (eat less, exercise more principle) are successful for long-term health [all diets have their benefits but the reality is that they are all high-fad diets where the weight loss is not sustainable].
2. There is no diet or healthy eating plan that is going to be the perfect fit for everybody. Try different foods and recipes and see what works for you and your body type.
3. Look at what you are eating - look at your plate before you start eating. Why do we become obese? Generally, it is to do with ALL of the following:
  • The quality of food we eat - always try to have leafy green vegetables with every meal
  • The amount and type of calories - don't pile the food up on your plate
  • The type of fats and carbohydrates - avoid sugary foods especially.
4. What does your meal consist of? Think about ALL of the following:
  • The type, balance and quality of carbohydrates, protein and fats
  • The amount of fibre
  • The type of phytonutrients (plant chemicals), i.e. leafy green vegetables
  • The vitamins and minerals
  • The timing of meals and portion sizes
  • The frequency of meals - eat little and often for more stable energy levels throughout the day.
5. Control your stress levels. If you don't subdue stress, you'll have more visceral fat (fat around your mid) due to an increase in the stress-hormone cortisol, which means more inflammation and therefore more obesity. The body shuts down your digestion under stress and the blood goes to the muscles, brain, heart and lungs for the fight or flight response. Learn to relax when you're eating and chew slowly.
6. Exercise correctly and progressively and avoid long endurance cardio if you can. Build up your muscle by incorporating strength training into your workouts. Muscle burns 70 times more calories than fat so when you lose weight (i.e. on a restrictive diet), you lose muscle and fat - when you put the weight back on, it is just fat and this burns 70 times fewer calories than muscle so you need fewer calories to maintain the same weight. Also, interval cardio training, i.e. running/cycling/rowing etc is much better than long endurance cardio training. It has the 'after burn' effect, which will help to reduce your belly fat.
7. Don't waste time doing abdominal crunches and situps - the priority should be to reduce your body fat by incorporating healthy eating and a progressive exercise programme.
8. Don't buy gadgets for abdominals such as those ab rollers - they are a waste of money.
9. Avoid 'bad' foods, i.e. obesity additives - you'll find them in most processed foods, ketchups, salad dressings, sauces, cakes, biscuits etc. They all contain hidden sugars, which are then stored as body fat.
10. Eat 'good' foods 90-95% of the time, i.e. fresh, natural foods, wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, lean cuts of meat, fish, nuts, seeds, healthy oils, legumes, natural yogurt, eggs, dark chocolate, organic nut butters, coconut milk, tubers etc.

How To Stay Slim: Why Calorie Counting Doesn't Work

Everyone knows they shouldn't have too much salt and sugar or the wrong kind of fat so we'll skip that conversation.
Your first step to stay slim (or healthy) must be "eating right." If you follow our basic principles there will be no counting calories in your life. You'll be able to eat whenever you're hungry yet always stay slim.
Here is our basic guideline for food selection:
• Eat foods as they are found in nature- in their original condition.
• If it has an ingredient list you need to read it and most likely- most often- not buy it.
• If it comes in a bag, box, or can (any kind of package) then there's probably a better choice to make.
Your mainstays will be lean meats and fish, legumes, fruits and vegetables. You will be visiting the spice aisle. Keep everything else either off your list or the exception to the rule.
Calorie counting won't create a struggle-free approach to staying slim. Here's why:
• Calories only reveal a number.
• Calories alone don't speak to specific nutritional needs for assorted nutrients.
• Calories don't identify whether your selection is a whole food or highly processed food that should be avoided.
• Calories don't govern your appetite or drive your cravings.
Instead of first being calorie conscious focus on choosing foods that either don't need a label or foods with 100% of their ingredients made by Mother Nature.
Here is your game plan for getting slim and staying that way- or for good health in general:
1. Eliminate from your life all foods containing chemical additives. As much as possible eliminate processed foods.
2. Learn to recognize your body's "true hunger." Let true hunger dictate when and how much you eat.
3. Exercise moderately and consistently.
ELIMINATE CHEMICAL ADDITIVES:
Eliminate processed foods from your diet. Don't confuse real whole food with edible creations made in a laboratory. The purpose of chemical creations is not to nourish- it's to drive cravings and subsequently drive sales for that product. We call this Frankenstein food "cravage"- our hybrid word (crave and garbage) for foods created in a laboratory to drive cravings while providing no significant nutrition.
Eating cravage is shooting yourself in your fitness foot. Cravage distorts your appetite and confuses your body's hunger signals, making you able to eat inordinately large quantities of food. You won't know if you're eating because you're hungry or because something tastes good. You won't know when you're satiated and you'll undoubtedly overeat.
DISCOVER YOUR TRUE HUNGER:
Your body's true hunger must drive the quantity of food you consume at any given time. When your body is free of chemical additives you'll be able to trust a physical feeling to let you know it's time to eat. You won't need to look at a clock for validation. True hunger will tell you it's time to eat.
Eating whole foods free of chemical additives makes you able to stop eating when your hunger has been satiated- a fundamental habit for staying slim.
You'll learn how many calories you need after you are in the habit of eating (whole foods) when you're hungry and stopping before you're stuffed.
Here are some additional points to remember:
• If you regularly find yourself feeling stuffed, then you're regularly overeating.
• Think in terms of bites rather than portions. If you savor every bite you'll have a better chance of recognizing your tipping point of enough but not too much- before you've consumed too many bites. Don't swallow anything that isn't worth swallowing. No mindless mouthfuls.
• Require that your food be nutritious and delicious. One without the other will not suffice.
EXERCISE: MOVE YOUR BODY
Everyone needs exercise- not just fat people. Design an in-home exercise plan for days when time is short. Including an at-home workout in your fitness plan is perhaps the #1 secret to sustaining your fitness habit through the myriad phases of life.
Any exercise is better than none, provided it isn't surreptitiously leading you to injury. We advocate weight training for many reasons- partly because it doesn't just burn extra calories while you're exercising.
Strength training with weights gradually changes your body's ratio of fat to muscle, increasing your basal metabolism. This is a fundamental advantage of weight training. Weight workouts can be designed for anyone- regardless of size or fitness level.
MAINTAINING HEALTHY WEIGHT
Once you have the habits of working out and eating right you'll have an easy time maintaining your desired weight. When these two habits are in place calorie counting could come in handy. If you eat a bit too much one day, you'll know how to go light for the next meal or two. Instead of peanut butter and jelly on bread you can leave out the bread or nibble on frozen blueberries or baked garbanzo beans.
Being fit feels good and half of fitness is eating well. Eliminate Frankenstein food from your life to get in touch with your true hunger. Lift weights to change your body's ratio of fat to muscle to increase your basal metabolism.
There you have it- a method for doing what is in your personal power to stay slim and healthy. It's not hard. Start now. You will be so glad you did.

The Top 5 Flat Stomach Rules

1. Eat a lot of lean proteins and green veggies.
Remember that not all calories are created equal. Your body burns more calories breaking down and utilizing protein than it does with carbohydrates (especially simple carbs).
2. Lift weights to build lean muscle!
Research shows that for every pound of muscle you add, you burn an extra 35-50 calories per day while at rest. If that reason isn't good enough to motivate you, let me tell you that your metabolism also goes into hyper drive for HOURS after your workout. This means that you burn tons of calories and fat after the work is already done. This makes your task of losing stomach fat so much easier. If you want to flatten your stomach, building lean muscle should be priority number one!
3. If at all possible, do H.I.I.T (high intensity interval training) upon waking.
If you can't swing early mornings get your cardio in AFTER your weight training session. Your body is forced to break down fat cells if your glycogen stores are low. Weight training makes your glycogen stores low. It's that simple.
4. Drink plenty of water!
Your individualized recommendation will vary, but I can tell you that I drink about 1 1/2 gallons daily. This flushes toxins and can actually help your body flush fat from your system!
5. Hold your stomach the way you want it to look.
A great exercise to practice this with is called "Abs while driving" (don't worry, it's much safer than texting and driving). Simply relax your shoulders and focus on pulling your belly in towards your spine, hold it for 10 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, and repeat.
Bonus tip:
Your core consists of your hips, pelvis, lower back, abdominals, obliques, and lower back. If you have a weak core you are more than likely subject to lower back pain, hip imbalances, and countless other problems. The best measure for correcting these issues is to take preemptive action! Seek out a fitness professional or do your own research and begin training your core. Once you start flattening your stomach you will feel invigorated. Soon enough, you will look in the mirror one day and just smile. I may be a little biased but there are only a few things in life that are more satisfying than changing the shape of your body for the better.
